Soil Erosion in Extensive versus Intensive Land Uses in Areas Sensitive to Desertification: A Case Study in Beira Baixa, Portugal

The occurrence of long periods drought followed by extreme episodes rainfall and ineffective soil conservation practices are the main causes erosion in Mediterranean region. objective this paper is to assess compare hydrological erosional responses related land use changes agricultural landscapes that sensitive a result significant replacement traditional uses. Such characterized extensive olive groves associated with pastureland intensive almond production, where deep plowing heavy machinery required. In each sampling site, runoff initiation, coefficient, loss were evaluated under simulated (55 mm h−1), at plot scale (0.25 m2), end hot dry summer period. Slope gradient, texture, bulk density, organic matter content, water plant cover also determined. results showed impact recently planted orchards (IAOs) on accelerating risk compared (EOGs), although initiation discharge very similar between studied mean values recorded for sediment concentration 118 g m−2 h−1 12 3.1 L−1 0.7 L−1, respectively, IAOs EOGs. Our demonstrated maintaining vegetation determining factor prevention control erosion, especially IAOs, retaining high percentages natural plant-residue mulch layers (>70%) reduced about 70% study.
